Is this normal for Christians/Catholics, or do I just live in a trashy neighborhood?

It may not be common, but it does not really matter where you are baptized. It doesn't have to be in a church. You can do it in a lake, on a beach, or even in a jacuzzi. The location doesn't matter. The ritual itself is the only true factor that usually does. This is just my opinion.
