How is plutonium made? I'm lost...?

So I've checked several places and they all say plutonium is made by bombarding uranium atoms with neutrons, I understand this but I thought elements were based on the number of protons an atom has, if a uranium atom is bombarded with neutrons new elements shouldn't be created only isotopes, help I'm so confused?
